The common name signifies the most common source of misidentification. In the Midwest, howerver, our Amanita muscaria has an orange cap. The ones out West are red.

This mushroom has a red cap with yellowish to cream colored warts across it. The stem is yellow with an indistinct volval at the base, lacking concentric rings. There should be no ring on the stem.


Amanita muscaria is very similar but has white gills and a prominent ring on the stalk. Amanita jacksonii has a white volva at the base.
