Coprinopsis romagnesiana

Common Name: None

Synonyms: Coprinopsis atramentarius var. squamosus;  Species Fungorum

Substrate: Ground, Wood, Buried Wood

Location: Hardwood forests, lawns

Spore Color: Black

Gill Color: Whitish; black with age

Comments:

I originally thought this mushroom was Coprinopsis atramentaria but the scales across the fairly prominent scales across the surface of the cap always bothered me. Only recently did I run across this name and it reminded me of this photo. I did not collect this specimen, so I cannot be 100% sure of the ID, but many of the features seem to fit. You should look for the clustered growth and tan to brown to orange-brown scales on the surface of the cap. Will update this page more once I find it again.

Lookalikes:

Coprinopsis atramentaria is the most similarbut is not covered with scales across the surface of the cap. Coprinopsis variegata is most commonly found growing directly from wood.
