Hygrocybe virginea

Common Name: Snowy Waxcap

Synonyms: Hygrophorus virgineus; Camarophyllus virgineus

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwoods

Spore Color: White

Gill Color: White

Comments:

This is a small, all-white mushroom that grows from the forest floor. It should have gills that run slightly down the stem and a waxy feel to the cap.

Lookalikes:

Hygrophorus eberneus is similar, but has a slimy cap and stem. Hygrocybe borealis (Camarophyllus borealis; Hygrophorus borealis) may or may not be a separate species, but you would need a microscope to separate it out. Several Clitocybe species can be similar but are usually larger. These would include Clitocybe robusta and Clitocybe irina
