Hygrocybe cuspidata

Common Name: Candy-apple Waxy Cap

Synonyms: Hygrophorus cuspidatus

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwoods forests

Spore Color: White

Gill Color: Yellow to orange

Comments:

This is a fairly common waxy cap. Look for the conic shape to the cap and the bright red hues. It will turn orange-red with age. The cap can be slimy, the stem dry.

Lookalikes:

Hygrocybe conica is very similar but bruises black. Hygrocybe persistens has a similar conic cap, but is yellow.
