Common Name: Witch's Hat

Synonyms: Hygrophorus conicus

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwoods or conifers

Spore Color: White

Gill Color: White or yellowish. Bruises black.


This mushroom is one of the easiest Hygrocybes to ID because of 1.) the conical shape of the 2.) the mushroom bruises black. The cap can range from bright red to orange to yellowish.


Hygrocybe cuspidata is very similar but does not bruise black. Hygrocybe singeri is nearly identical except the cap and stalk are slimy.
