Sarcodon imbricatus

Common Name: Scaly Tooth

Synonyms: Hydnum imbricatum

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwoods or Conifers

Spore Color: Brownish

Tooth Color: Pale Brown

Comments:

A neat mushroom to find. The surface of the cap should have brown scales, and when you flip it over, the entire underside is covered with spines instead of teeth or pores. It can grow to be a fairly nice size.

Lookalikes:

Sarcodon scabrosus is similar but has a blackish stalk base and a bitter taste. Its scales are also not raised.
