Hericium erinaceus

Common Name: Lion's Mane; Pom Poms; Sheepshead

Synonyms:

Substrate: Wood

Location: Hardwood Forests

Spore Color: White

Comments:

A very easy mushroom to identify. This mushroom grows on wood and has a central white mass with small spines coming off that flow towards the ground. The spines tend to turn a yellow-brown color with age. As long as this has not happened, this mushroom is a great edible. It has the texture (and some say flavor) of lobster when it is cooked.

Lookalikes:

Herecium coralloides is similar but is branched like coral.
