Stemonitis splendens

Common Name: Chocolate Tube Slime

Synonyms:

Substrate: Dead Wood and Leaves

Location: Hardwoods and Conifers

Comments:

A very recognizable slime mold, look for thin brown hairs coming up from a log that are attached to a black base.

Lookalikes:

Most people are fine with just calling this Stemonitis, but if you want to go to species, then S. axifera is rust brown and S. fusca has a tall stalk that is often 1/4" or more in height.
