Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa var. fruticulosa

Common Name: Coral Slime

Synonyms: Species Fungorum

Substrate: Dead Wood

Location: Hardwoods

Comments:

This is a very small, white slime mold that is most common shortly after rainy periods. There are several common varieties, with the only one pictured at the moment being Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa var. fruticulosa. From it's habitat on wood, it forms masses of small white cylinders, that are easily destroyed with your finger. This is one of the most common slime molds around the world.

Lookalikes:

Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa var. porioides looks similar to a small, white Sweetgum seed pod. While var. fruticulosa is cylindrical, var. porioides is hemispherical on a log, entrenched with a honeycomb like pattern.  Several other varieties are C. fruticulosa var. arbuscula, and C. fruticulosa var. flexuosa. I do not have information on them at the moment.
