Pleurotus ostreatus

Pleurotus ostreatus

Common Name: Oyster Mushrooms

Substrate: Wood

Location: Hardwood Forests

Spore Color: White to Pinkish

Gill Color: White

One of the most common edible mushrooms, the Oyster mushroom can nearly be found year round. I have seen it personally from April to Febuary. So if I see any in March then I can claim year round.

The key identifying features are that they grow off the side of wood in a shelf style, they have gills that run down the stem, they are somewhat large in size, and they have light colored spores. There is a summer version that some people differentiate as Pleurotus pulmonarius. It has a whitish or brownish upper surface to the cap, while P. ostreatus has more grayish tones.

Crepidotus applanatus is smaller and has brown spores.
