Russula pectinatoides

Russula pectinatoides

Common Name: None

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwood Forests

Spore Color: Yellowish

Gill Color: Yellowish

This is one of the "foetid" Russulas. Michael Kuo describes the smell as "weakly to moderately reminiscent of maraschino cherries, almonds, or benzaldehyde, with a waxy or spermatic component."

Aside from the smell, you are looking for the straw color to the cap, whose margin is lined and pimply. The cap and gills will often discolor browish or reddish. There should be no granules or crust on the cap.

Russula pulverulenta is also a "foetid" Russula, but has yellow granules on the cap surface.
