Russula fragrantissima

Common Name: None

Synonyms:

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwood Forests

Spore Color: Yellowish

Gill Color: Yellowish

Comments:

This is one of the "foetid" Russulas. It has a sweet/sour smell to it. Aside from the smell, look for the dull yellow cap and somewhat large size. You will need a microscope to confirm the ID.

Lookalikes:

Russula laurocerasi is very similar and needs to be separated with a microscope. Russula granulata has crustose patches on the cap. Russula amenolens has a darker brown cap and lacks the distinctive odor. Russula pectinatoides has discoloring gills.
