Scleroderma bovista

Common Name: Potato Earthball

These mycorrhizal mushrooms grow from the ground, and does not have the leopard skin pattern that is common with several of the other common earthballs. A drop of KOH on the surface should yeild a red reaction. It gets the common name from the smooth surface. The top of the surface may split with age.

Poisonous. Do not eat.


Scleroderma areolatum has a pale yellow-brown surface with scales. Scleroderma citrinum also has a scaly, rather than smooth surface.
