Polyporus leptocephalus

Common Name: Light Cap Black-foot

Synonyms:

Substrate: Wood

Location: Hardwood Forests

Spore Color: White

Pore Color: Whitish

Comments:

This polypore attached to a wood substrate with a stem that has a black base. Aside from that, look for the light brown, sometimes creamy colored cap.

Lookalikes:

Some authors synonymize Polyporus varius with this mushroom, but I tend to separate out the smaller version that often grows on twigs. It also usually has a slightly darker cap. Polyporus badius is also similar, but has deep red tones to the cap. Almost liver red.
