Comments: 

This polypore attached to a wood substrate. It has a scaly, circular, cap, and can often become a darker brown than in the picture. The outer margin of the cap is usually lined with fine hairs.

Lookalikes:  

Polyporus brumalis has a darker cap. Polyporus alveolaris has orange tones to the cap. Polyporus leptocephalus lacks scales on the surface of the cap and has a black stem base. Polyporus varius and P. badius also have a black stem.
