Hapalopilus croceus

Common Name: None

Synonyms: Polyporus croceusAurantioporus croceus

Substrate: Wood

Location: Hardwood Forests

Spore Color: White

Comments:

When fresh, this mushroom has a vibrant orange color. It may tend to fade or brown with age. Said to be a fairly uncommon mushroom. The one time I have found it, the fruitbody was over a foot across.

A drop of KOH on the surface or inner flesh should yeild a bright purple color.

Lookalikes:

Hapalopilus nidulans is similar but much smaller.
