Pluteus melleus

Common Name: None

Synonyms:

Substrate: Dead wood

Location: Hardwood forests

Spore Color: Pink

Gill Color: Whitish or pinkish

Comments:

There are not too many yellow mushrooms that grow from wood. This mushroom starts out with a yellow cap that fades to a duller yellow as it ages. The way you put it into the genus Pluteus is to look for pink spores. Often the gills will be pink in mature specimens. This particular version has a dull yellow stem.

Lookalikes:

Pluteus admirablis is similar but has a bright yellow stem. Pluteus chrysophlebius has a white stem.
