Tremella fuciformis

Common Name: Snow Fungus

Synonyms:

Substrate: Wood

Location: Hardwoods and Conifers

Comments:

An all-white jelly fungus that comes out shortly after a rainfall. It is a fairly easy ID once you have seen it.

One interersting sidenote about this species is that it is actually a parasite (maybe) on another fungus. It is either a parasite on Hypoxylon, or relies on that fungus as a symbiont to break down the substrate to a form that Tremella can use. Read the whole story at Tom Volk's website.

Lookalikes:

Ductifera pululahuana is very similar but has an off-yellow color. Tremella mesenterica is similar, but is yellow.
