Urnula craterium

Common Name: Devil's Urn

Synonyms:

Substrate: Wood - Sticks and Branches

Location: Hardwood Forests

Comments:

Another very common spring-time mushroom, this species starts to make an appearance shortly before the morels do. Thus, it is one of the first mushrooms to make an appearance on any given year. Devil's Urns may appear to be growing from the ground, but if you dig down into the leaf litter, you will find the stick that they are actually growing from. Very young specimens will appear like a black club with a small hole in the top. As they age, the cup shape becomes more apparent

This fungus is actually a parasite on many species of trees, and can cause a canker to appear on them. These mushrooms fruit from the branches of infected trees after they fall to the ground.
