Scutellinia scutellata

Scutellinia scutellata

Common Name: Eyelash Cups

Synonyms: Peziza scutellataSpecies Fungorum

Substrate: Most common on moist logs

Location: Hardwoods

Group: Ascomycete

Edibility: Too small and inconsequential.

These small cups rarely get larger than the size of a dime. They are a fairly easy ID with the bright orange color to the inner cup, with small black to brown hairs that are positioned around the rim of the cup. This is where the common name originates. You may need to use a hand lens to properly see the hairs on the margin

The mushroom itself is very thin and fragile. Combined with the small size, it is often difficult to collect from it's habitat in tact.

Scutinella erinaceus is similar but the inner surface of the cup is not as bold of an orange. It is a duller orange or a yellow-orange color. Scutellinia umbarum is found on the ground in Western states. Humaria hemispherica is larger but also has eyelashes around the rim. The inner cup, however, is grayish with a fuzzy brown exterior.
