Sarcoscypha occidentalis

Common Name: Stalked Scarlet Cup

Synonyms: Species Fungorum

Substrate: Sticks and Logs

Location: Hardwoods

Group: Ascomycete

Comments:

This mushroom is the stalked version of S. austriaca. It will generally start to appear shortly after morel season, and is often fairly small, but can grow up to a couple of inches across. The inner surface of the cup will be a bright red, while the underside will be a whitish color.

Lookalikes:

Sarcoscypha austriaca (S. coccinea in the west). S. austriaca does not have a stem that is as well developed as this mushroom, and it appears slightly earlier in the year.
