Microstoma floccosum
Common Name: Shaggy Scarlet Cup
Synonyms: Species Fungorum
Substrate: Sticks and Logs
Location: Hardwoods
Group: Ascomycete
Comments:
A small red cup fungus that can be easily identified because of the small white hairs that are found all over the fruitbody. It often fruits in clusters along the same log, so if you see one, move the leaves around a little bit and you may find a few more. Primarily fruits in the spring time to early summer.
Lookalikes:
Sarcoscypha austriaca (S. coccinea in the west) and Sarcoscypha occidentalis. Neither have the white hairs.
