Craterellus cornucopioides

Common Name: Black Trumpets

Synonyms: Craterellus fallax, Horn of Plenty

Substrate: Ground

Location: Forest Floor near oaks, usually in moss

Spore Color: Salmon, Yellow, White

Underside: Black, Grayish, or Pinkish

Comments:

Probably the best edible mushroom out there, either fresh or if it has been dried and rehydrated. Almost every time I find this mushroom, it is growing in moss, so that is always a good place to look.

It is really easy to identify, as it is vase shaped, all black, and has very thin flesh. The underside may sometimes have a salmon colored tinge as pictured below.

Lookalikes:

None
