Tylopilus felleus

Common Name: Bitter Bolete

Synonyms:

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwood forests

Spore Color: Pinkish brown

Pore Color: Whitish becoming pinkish, bruises brownish

Comments:

This group of Boletes can be tough to separate out sometimes. Tylopilus is most often defined by a pinkish pore surface.

When looking to ID this species, the first thing to look for is the extremely bitter taste. If it has that, then the Tylopilus species you have is likely Tylopilus rubrobrunneus or this species. Finalize with reticulation on the stem. T. felleus should have prominent reticulation.

Lookalikes:

Tylopilus rubrobrunneus has no reticulation on the stem.
