Helvella crispa

Common Name: Elfin Saddle, Fluted White Helvella

Synonyms:

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwood or conifer forests

Spore Color: White

Comments:

While not all that uncommon, it is always a great find.

There are several things that make this mushroom easy to confirm without a microscope. The first thing is the all-white colorations to the cap and stem. Secondly, there should be deep ribs running down the length of the stem. Finally, the undersurface of the cap should be finally hairy. Finalize these three points, and you should have a descent ID.

Poisonous raw. May be edible if properly prepared.

Lookalikes:

Helvella lactea has a smooth undersurface to the cap. Helvella lacunosa has a grayish cap and fluted gray stalk.
