Amanita sp-17

Common Name: None

Synonyms:

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwood Forests

Spore Color: White

Gill Color: White

Comments:

With Amanita sect. Vaginatae, you are looking for a volva at the base of the stem. In order to get much further with one of these gray species, you are going to need a microscope to look at the spores.

You can get fairly far without one however. Other than the volva, look for a gray cap that does not have unpigmented regions, a universal veil that does not gray or blacken with handling, a medium sized fruitbody, and (possibly) some forking of the gills. You can finalize the ID if the spores are elliptical.

This mushroom is currently undergoing taxonomic and genetic research, so it will likely have a better name soon.
