Amanita muscaria

Common Name: Fly Agaric

Synonyms:

Substrate: Ground

Location: Conifer Forests

Spore Color: White

Gill Color: White

Comments:

I have heard tales of this red version of Amanita muscaria being found east of the Mississippi (in Indiana specifically), but I have not seen it with my own eyes. The most common form of Amanita muscaria in the east has a orange-yellow cap surface.

All forms of this mushroom should have patches on the cap (remnants of a universal veil), and a bulb at the base that usually has 3 concentric rings of material just above the bulb.

Lookalikes:

Amanita parcivolvata has yellow gills and no ring on the stem. Amanita muscaria var. guessowii has an orange-yellow cap.
