Amanita muscaria var. guessowii

Common Name: American Eastern Yellow Fly Agaric

Synonyms:

Substrate: Ground

Location: Conifer Forests

Spore Color: White

Gill Color: White

Comments:

This is the midwestern version of one of the most famous mushrooms in existence. Amanita muscara aka Fly Agaric aka Christmas mushroom is commonly thought of as having a bright red cap with white dots. This mushroom can be found out west, but our Eastern version is yellow, sometimes yellow-orange with white universal veil remants on the cap. The other key feature to look for is a bulbuous base with concentric rings on the stem directly above it.

These mushrooms fruit in huge numbers. I have seen thousands of them at once in a single stand of woods.

An unusual fruiting in May. Has all features except concentric rings at base. Be warned this strange one may be out there.
