Amanita jacksonii-ish
Common Name: None
Synonyms:
Substrate: Ground
Location: Hardwood forests
Spore Color: White
Gill Color: Orange-yellow to yellow
Comments:
This mushroom is very similar to Amanita jacksonii, but lacks the reddish to orange pattern on the stem - even when the mushroom is young. It may be a new species according to Amanita expert Rod Tulloss at Amanitaceae.org. Also, the cap often contains more yellow in the cap, epecially towards the margin, as compared to A. jacksonii.
Red to Red-orange cap and a white volva at the base. This will all be sorted out in the future.
Lookalikes:
Amanita banningiana has more orange-yellow tones to the cap and a pale yellow stem without an orange pattern. Amanita arkansana also has more of an orange-brown cap as well, but with white gills. There is also a very similar species that I am calling Amanita jacksonii-ish that lacks the orange patched pattern going up the stem.
