Amanita cokeri
Common Name: Coker's Lepidella
Synonyms:
Substrate: Ground
Location: Hardwood Forests
Spore Color: White
Gill Color: White to cream
Comments:
One of the most impressive Amanita sect. Lepidella species out there. First look for the concentic warts that emanate from the center of the cap. They often take on a pyramidal shape. The ring on the stem is usually very elaborate, frequently making a double-ring. Finally, it should have a swollen, slightly rooting base.
There should be no staining, or possibly some slight brown staining at the base.
Lookalikes:
Amanita subcokeri stains red. Amanita spissa var. alba has yellow-green colorations to the cap. Amanita abrupta is usually smaller with an abrupt bulb. Also check out Amanita rhopalopus and A. ravenelii.
