Amanita canescens

Common Name: Golden Threads Lepidella

Synonyms:

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwood Forests

Spore Color: White

Gill Color: Whiteish

Comments:

This mushroom gets its common name, because if you gently rub your finger along the stem, the fibers that you are rubbing should turn to a yellow color. This is one of the easiest ways to confirm your ID. There are several other features you can look for first, however.

The main points are the gray cap with white specks and the lack of a volva at the base of the mushroom. And as with all Amanitas, white, free gills.

Lookalikes:

The Amanita pantherina group can appear similar, but they have a volva at the base of the stem. This would include A. multisquamosa.
