Amanita borealisorora

Amanita borealisorora

Common Name: Northern Sister Ringless Amanita

Synonyms: Amanita ceciliae, Amanita inaurataAmanita strangulata

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwood forests

Spore Color: White

Gill Color: Off white to grayish

This is a somewhat common species in Amanita section Vaginata. Members of this section have a distinct volva at the base with no bulb.

Look for the slightly brownish or olivaceous coloring to the cap with gray remnants of the universal veil. There should be no color changes to this mushroom if it is cut or bruised. There should also be no ring on the stem.

This mushroom is sometimes called Amanita ceciliae, but that is a European species.

Other species of Amanita in the section Vaginata are similar. Amanita spreta is slightly more robust and has a ring on the stem. It also does not have gray universal veil remnants on the cap.
