Amanita bisporigera

Common Name: Destoying Angel

Synonyms: Amanita virosa, White Death Cap

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwood forests

Spore Color: White

Gill Color: White

Comments:

One of the few deadly poisonous mushrooms in our area. This mushroom can be easily ID'd by 5 key features. 1.) White cap and stem 2.) Ring on the stem 3.) Volva at the base and 4.) White gills that are free from the stem 5.) Growing on ground. Along with these features, there should be no scales on the cap; it should be smooth. A way to confirm your ID is to put a drop of KOH on the surface of the cap. It should turn yellow.

Although it is deadly poisonous, it is fairly common in the woods in our area. It is safe to handle the mushroom, just dont eat it.

Lookalikes:

Amanita elliptosperma is very similar, but the cap does not turn yellow with KOH. It has a thin and membranous ring on the stem. Amanita sp-S04 has narrower spores than A. elliptosperma. Amanita magnivelaris does not turn yellow with KOH, has a thick felty ring, and a floccose stem.

Leucoagaricus leucothites can also appear similar, but often grows in lawns, and does not have a volva around the base of the stem.

Cap color change with KOH. If there is no color change to yellow, it is likely another similar species.
