Amanita banningiana

Common Name: Mary Banning Slender Caesar

Synonyms:

Substrate: Ground

Location: Hardwood Forests

Spore Color: White

Gill Color: Whiteish

Comments:

A neat mushroom to find. The three main ID characters to look for at first are the yellow-orange cap, the strongly lined margin, and the volva at the base of the stem. As the mushroom ages, the mushroom may have more of a yellow-brown look. Some other features to finish off your ID is the ring on a yellowish stem without orange patches, a pale yellow ring, and free gills.

Lookalikes:

The closest lookalike is Amanita arkansana. A. arkansana is a larger mushroom that has white gills. This mushroom is very close to Amanita jacksonii, but that mushroom often has a much more developed volva and more red tones to the color of the cap. It can also be similar to Amanita flavoconia, but that mushroom does not have a lined margin, nor a volva, and has patches on the cap when it is young.
