About our company
The Hoosier Mushroom Company (HMC) is a small, family owned business located in beautiful Nashville, IN. Brown County, and the village of Nashville, are known as the "Art Colony of the Midwest." HMC is one of over 250 shops in this small town that feature local artisans and artists displaying their craft.
Origins
The idea for The Hoosier Mushroom Co. store emanated from our small mushroom farm, which currently produces six varieties of mushrooms - Oyster, Shiitake, Maitake, Lion's Mane, Nameko, and Reishi. Before us, there were no local sources of information or supplies for those interested in mycology of any form…whether it be mushroom hunting, identification, cultivation, healthy living, or even general information on fungi. Mushroom hunting, particularly for morels, is a time-honored tradition in our part of the state. Our goal is to fill this niche with a customer-focused, community-based, and information-rich organization.
Your Source for Information
We view The Hoosier Mushroom Co. as much of an information resource, as it is a business. We stock over 50 different books dedicated to mushroom identification and we have experts on staff that can assist you with any of your mycological needs. Mushroom hunters are encouraged to bring in mushrooms you find in the woods, or even that strange thing growing in your yard, and let us help you to narrow down what it might be. One of the aspects that make us unique is that we are mushroom growers, as well as retailers, so we can give you information from experience on most of the products that we sell. Our goal is to continually develop new and innovative resources for our customers to utilize.
Nature
The Hoosier Mushroom Co. is located just minutes away from Brown County State Park, which sees over a million visitors a year. It is the largest State Park in the area, and is very mycologically diverse. We often visit the park for hikes, and we encourage you to take a trip with us to the park on a mycological foray. Planned visits to the park will be posted on our blog, as well as in our shop.
Sustainability
As an environmentally conscious company, we are continually looking for ways to lessen our environmental impact. Methods for sustainable mushroom production are ever-evolving, and we will stay on the forefront of emerging procedures.
We mirror this sentiment in our retail operations. As a retail merchant, we strive for social and economic sustainability through partnerships with fair trade organizations and vendors wherever possible. We also ship our goods using recycled and biodegradable products.
